The Greater Lincolnshire Adult Learner of the Year awards celebrate individuals who show exceptional commitment, progress, and determination through their learning journey.

Halmat Tofiq, 43, from Boston, demonstrated all these qualities and more as he scooped an award for 2026.

Enrolling on an 鈥業ntroduction to Electrical Installation鈥 course at 天美视频 in 2025, Halmat wanted to build upon his limited electrical experience and work towards a recognised qualification in the sector.

From the off, he impressed his tutors with his practical ability, positive attitude, and willingness to support the learning of others around him, and supported by the team at 天美视频, he thrived in a learning environment. Halmat鈥檚 daughter, Honey, explained: 鈥淭he tutors at 天美视频 were crucial in helping Dad grow by offering guidance, patience and encouragement at every step.鈥

As the course progressed, Halmat鈥檚 dedication and perseverance helped him to develop his technical knowledge and independent learning skills. And, on successfully completing the course, he signed up to a Level 2 Electrical Diploma to further his training and prospects of a career in the industry.

It鈥檚 a sector that needs skilled workers, with construction, housing and infrastructure projects all requiring qualified electricians to support growth. Halmat鈥檚 journey shows that the talent and ambition is in our communities, and with the help of our adult learning team we鈥檙e helping residents to develop and progress their new or existing careers.

By working closely with learning providers, employers, and industry partners to design courses that align with local workforce demands, we help to provide accessible training, clear progression routes, and in-demand skills and qualifications that our industries need.

Steve Davison, Subject Lead for Electrical at 天美视频, said: 鈥淗almat stood out among his learning group for his natural leadership qualities, and he often helped keep his peers motivated and engaged.
鈥淏ecause of his progress, Halmat is able to enrol on the Level 2 Electrical Diploma and it鈥檚 a pathway that offers a clear progression towards future employment or training in the sector.鈥

On awarding Halmat with the award at Lincoln Castle, Justin Brown, Assistant Director for Growth, said: 鈥淗almat鈥檚 story is a fantastic testament to learning later in life, and the support on offer from our Adult Learning Teams to help people achieve their ambitions.

鈥淭he knowledge and skills he鈥檚 gained have put him in a great position to get a formal qualification, which he鈥檚 already progressing, and it puts him on course for a career that he鈥檚 excited about.

鈥淗almat should be incredibly proud of what he has achieved so far. And, with his drive for learning and development, I have a feeling he鈥檒l continue to achieve great things in the future.鈥
